My Little Pony - Movie Review

via reviews http://ift.tt/2hYquSm

'My Little Pony'
Cast (Voices): Sia, Emily Blunt, Kristin Chenoweth, Tara Strong, Ashleigh Ball, Andrea Libman, Liev Schreiber, Tabitha St. Germain, Cathy Weseluck, Michael Peña, Uzo Aduba, Taye Diggs, Zoe Saldana
Director: Jayson Thiessen
Rating:

This movie version of the long-running TV show 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic,' a Hasbro property, is a pleasant, completely unchallenging anime that's unlikely to charm anyone. No doubt it's colourful, eye-pleasing and harmless and also hopes to put forward the message of empathy and friendship but the lesson won't go down well even with a kiddie audience.

'My Little Pony'

Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy and Rarity embark on an epic journey to save Ponyville from a dark force. Three of Equestria's princesses have already been captured so it's up to the six of them to save their magic and their home.

The film version stays true to the TV version in every possible way- the voice cast is the same, Jayson Thiessen takes the directorial leap to the big screen and lead writer of the series Meghan McCarthy also makes the leap to the cinemas. The themes of friendship, empathy, trust and teamwork are definitely lessons to be learnt but the narration of it is so all over the place that the multitude of characters feel underdeveloped and appear to be fillers trying to shore up the vacant spaces in the inarticulate spiel. The songs, while pleasant on the ears, are not memorable either. What passes off as magic here, are a mish-mash of colors and indistinctive elements. The story-telling isn't smart enough to hold anyone's attention and the animation specs are so over-indulgent that you just don't feel enamoured by it. The voicing also sounds put-on and fake. It's all a harmless bit of fluff ... but there's just no fun in it!
